Just a small taste of the excitement and fun which took place this past Sunday @ The Cage! Kosher Food! Raffles! Bouncy Castles! Arts N' Crafts! Magic Show... the list goes on, and of course the lighting of the beautiful Lego Menorah which our dear children help make. Looking back at this Chanukah, I, for one have to say that Chanukah in Singapore is like no other in the WORLD!!! OOOOO!!! AHHHHH!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!! These were the sounds heard through out last night, ( Dec. 1), hilarious and educational evening. Eran Katz lectured about the super powers of ones' mind, how everyone poccess the power to enhance ones' ability and performed a couple of breath taking, jaw dropping, feats! There was a large audience, from children to adults, beverages and popcorn, and smiles all around. I think it's safe to say we will remember this night for a long time...!

Here we go Maccabi, here we go! What a season, watching the girls and boys week in and week out playing with passion, teamwork, and really giving it all. This past Sunday, ( Nov. 30, 09) was the award ceremony. Beautiful trophies were given out to Most Valuable Players and to ones who the coach thought deserved it. Great job and keep up the great work! Special thanks go out to all the Coaches, parents, fans, and of course the players for making this season, a season to remember so when next season come along every team will know Maccabi is here, and here to stay!

Back and forth the dice was rolled, " double sixes" some shouted out; i knew i just entered the annual exciting tournament of Shesh Besh. This past Monday the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr. Wong Kan Seng, visited the Jacob Ballas Centre and Magain Avoth Synagogue. He was given a tour of the premises, and informed of all the social and religious activities that occur there. He then ate lunch with members of the Jewish Welfare Board in our own Awafi Restaurant.

The Situation in the Holy Land...

On Tuesday night the JBC hosted a presentation given by H.E. Ilan Ben-Dov, Israeli Ambassador to Singapore. The Ambassador showed what our brethren in Israel are living through, and an unbiased glimpse of the military actions taking place in Gaza. He then answered numerous questions from the audience.

The children were entertained by jumping castles, were able to make their own Menorahs, and played indoor football...The adults had quite a time with a grand bingo game, shesh-besh, and a lucky draw with amazing prizes....The afternoon came to a close with the grand Menorah Lighting ceremony.

Following the Mumbai Memorial Service, a Gesher event was held at the JBC. An extremely entertaining presentation was given by Mr. Gavriel Sanders, a former evangelical minister and missionary who converted to Judaism some nine years ago. Gavriel spoke about his journey and kept the crowd laughing with his humor. It's been great having him here with us over the last six weeks!!

Memorial Service For Mumbai Victims

On Monday Night the Jacob Ballas Centre hosted a memorial service for those murdered in the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. The evening was well attended by over two hundred people, and was graced with the presence of the Israeli Ambassador to Singapore, His Excellency Ilan Ben-Dov, and the First Secretary of the High Commission of India. A new initiative was launched by the Yeshiva Boys in memory of the martyrs, details of which can be found at ispreadlight.org.

Being that the semester is coming to an end, this past Monday night, November 17th, we hosted a sushi party for the outgoing exchange students of SMU and NUS, on the seventh floor of the Jacob Ballas Centre. The evening was a resounding success, with thirty five students attending. The sushi was specially prepared by a renowned sushi chef from the Singapore Hilton. We all enjoyed ourselves immensely, and the party continued late into the night.......We'll really miss you guys, make sure to keep in touch!!

Sunday Funday-Abraham's Tent!!

This past Sunday the children in our community were treated to a fun filled day in Abraham's Tent!!! After eating lunch, the kids were invited into the tent by Abraham himself to witness his hospitality toward the three angels. Next, they proceeded to roll their own pita bread, which they got to take home at the end of the day! After a movie that they watched in the tent, the children got busy with some exciting arts and crafts projects. Then some more fun games, and a special story by master storyteller Tami!!

Wednesday night brought the arrival of the Jewish Learning Institute to Singapore. JLI is a world-acclaimed adult education program which provides professionally concieved courses that are taught through interactive dialogue accompanied by dynamic textbooks and dramatic audio-visual presentations. The first series offered in Singapore, entitled "Soul Maps; Kabbalah for the Soul" and presented by Rabbi Abergel, began tonight with over 50 people in attendance.

Due to the rain, the Grand Community Sukkot B-B-Q was held on the 5th floor of the JBC. The children had loads of fun with Sukkot arts and crafts, the Dynamite Builders activity, and a magic show. On Wednesday night, following a sumptuous feast in the Grand JBC Sukkah, Professor Ehud Razin of Jerusalem gave a presentation showing many medical advances developed at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Professor Razin is Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Hebrew University. Just in case you're wondering, Gesher is a social program designed to bridge (hence it's name) the diverse groups of Jews that live and work in Singapore.

Time is Relative

The human perspective of time is straightforward and linear. What happened in the past is behind us in the rearview mirror. The future looms ahead, just beyond the horizon. The now is upon us - right now.

After this moment, time and life will march forward. If that was a good moment, it will be stored in the annals of the brain for future reference. If it was a tough time, it may be difficult to purge it from the archives of the mind.

This is our memory. Some cherish their memories: a virtual scrapbook available for perusal at random intervals throughout the day. Fuzzy cats, rainbows, childhood friends, and homeruns during kickball games uplift them when the future looks grim. Others are haunted by the past. Shaken with the knowledge of their personal history and plagued by painful recollections of life's tribulations; they feel weighed down. Mourning the past, fearful about the future, unsure of their next step, for some memory can be a chronic illness.

Granted, from the human perspective it's all history. Memory is just the highway mile marker of life's progression. At times, some memory maintenance may be in order. One might resign oneself to dedicated sessions with their psychologist to address particular failures and shortcomings. Alternatively, one could find solace in a few more milligrams of Zoloft to ease the stress and smooth the rough edges of the psyche.

Let's thank G‑d, because He at least has a refreshing and positive spin on history and memory. G‑d's vantage is a 180-degree turn from the straight and narrow human perspective. He functions in the infinite pocket of the now, that includes both the past and future. A sandwich of time where all events have occurred, are occurring, and will occur-simultaneously.

That sounds lovely for Him, but should we care? For it is here and now that we travel, stuck within the boundaries of time, plodding forward with fuzzy kittens or tragic thoughts following close behind. Can G‑d's transcendent mastery of time help us?

Yes it can. Our missteps have not only been recorded on G‑d's funniest home videos but are actually taking place right now. Don't be crestfallen; He won't make fun of you for vomiting at the Junior Prom. Rise high, for the way of the Jewish spiritual warrior is transcendent. We have the latent power within us to go beyond the confines of the time space continuum and mend our wrongdoings. Teshuvah, repentance, is the ability to travel back to that moment and fix the issue. Since, from G‑d's vantage point – it's all going down right now, it is never too late.

THE 48 HOUR BRAIN

Today's neurology has caught up with yesterday's science fiction. Maps have been drawn up of the interior of our skull. Virtually every hillock and groove has been tagged: tweak this neuron-transmitter, and you'll hear lyrics of a song you haven't heard or remembered in 30 years; pinch that nerve ending, and you'll zap your craving for potato chips and lose 15 pounds in a month. Well, not quite. But we're getting there.
The year, a body of time with 365 organs and limbs, also has a brain -- the 48 hours of Rosh Hashanah. That's what the Hebrew words rosh hashanah literally mean -- "head of the year." On Rosh Hashanah, we crown G-d King. On Rosh Hashanah, G-d is aroused, once again, with the desire to create the world. Channels of vitality and awareness connect the 48 hours of Rosh Hashanah to each of the hundreds of days, thousands of hours and millions of seconds of the year, like those that join the brain to its body.
That's why the two days of Rosh Hashanah are so special: the impact of our every action, word and thought increases thousand-fold. If we're kind on Rosh Hashanah, we'll be kinder people throughout the year. If we weigh our words carefully during these two days, our speech will be more refined throughout the year. If we focus on a certain weakness of ours and resolve to make a stronger effort, we'll find our resolution translating into action far more effectively than resolutions made at other times.
If you can access the brain, you can do just about anything. You can waken memories, restore lapsed talents, alleviate fears, magnify joys, abolish prejudices, stimulate interest and charge up motivation. You can basically re-program your life, at least for a year.
